Course name: PRE-IELTS (Academic Modules)                        

Course length: 10 weeks (4 meetings/ week), equivalent to 80 hours

Vietnamese/native rate: 30 meetings/10 meetings

SPEAKING FOCUS:

  • Conversational skills and confidence in using language for conversing about daily topics;
  • Speaking task types and requirements of parts 1 and 2 of the IELTS Speaking test;
  • Vocabulary for common topics: daily life, house and home, hobbies/leisure/entertainment, travel and holidays, food, transport and places in town, jobs/work/study, health/medicine, language, science and technology

SPEAKING OUTCOMES (SWBAT):

  • initiate and maintain conversations and interactions with a partner by using questioning skills and communicative strategies;
  • use key vocabulary for each topic with accurate word stress and acceptable sentence stress and intonation;
  • express ideas across present, past, and future timeframes using correct tenses;
  • use simple and compound structures in speaking performance; complex structures, however, are limited and with frequent errors. 

LISTENING FOCUS:

  • Typical listening tasks (social exchanges) in part 1 of the Listening test;
  • Question types: spelling and numbers, multiple choice, short answer questions, sentence completion, and note completion.

LISTENING OUTCOMES (SWBAT):

  • complete a listening test with 3 sections (30 questions in total) with at least 12/30 correct answers. 

READING FOCUS:

  • Short reading texts and tasks found in General IELTS (70%) and Academic IELTS (30%) with topics such as daily routine, housing and accommodation, holiday activities, food festivals, jobs and employment, language development, the internet.
  • Reading skills: skimming and scanning
  • Reading strategies: reading for specific information and detailed meaning, guessing meaning and understanding instructions, identifying key words from a reading text, summarizing key information.
  • Reading questions: multiple choice, sentence completion, note completion, true/false/not given, matching, short-answer questions;

LISTENING OUTCOMES (SWBAT):

  • complete a Reading test (2 reading passages from General IELTS and 1 from Academic IELTS) and answer 15 out of 30 questions correctly.

WRITING TASK 1 (SWBAT):

  • write a report on a simple line graph (80-100 words, with a clear structure (opening, overall information, key features) but these parts may be underdeveloped;
  • use appropriate simple words for describing trends (i.e. increase, decrease, fluctuate, stabilize, etc.);
  • write informal (to a friend) and formal (job application) emails with a clear structure (salutation, body, closing).

WRITING TASK 2 (SWBAT):

  • write a well-developed essay describing advantages and disadvantages with a clear structure (short introduction, two body paragraphs, short conclusion)
  • use basic paraphrasing, simple/compound structures/basic cohesive devices in writing.
